Then I feel like Homer Simpson watching the Half-Assed Approach to Foundation Repair video.Īnd yeah, the last time I tried campaign mode, I hit a point about 1/3 of the way in, where I felt that I was going to have to do a lot of grinding just to get up to the point where I had the parts available to be fun again. You just described about 2/3 of the tutorial videos I watch on any subject. The tutorials on doing such always lose me because they spend 20 minutes discussing what I already know (mostly staging) then 5 seconds on the part I don't understand (which is more my fault than that of the video maker trying to help.) Maybe I are just not SMRT enough for this The tutorials I find don't even match up to what I see on screen. Hell, I can't even figure out most of mechjeb's functions. Never really figured out what to do with it. I've put a "science station" in orbit and left a few kerbals there.

I've built a SSTO shuttle analog, but never figured out how to use the claw or crane deal, etc. I don't use a lot of mods, mostly mechjeb, kerbal engineer, and kw rocketry IIRC.

I've gotten in campaign mode maybe 1/3rd the way up the tech tree before either I give up, or an update breaks mods or something. Managed to build at least one lander at some point that worked, and could launch and return, but it was stupidly over-built and used no docking or in-orbit refueling, since I have yet to successfully dock or even intercept a target in orbit but maybe once or twice. I build rockets, and can get them to orbit and occasionally get to the Mun or another planet. I can never really get anywhere with this, but would like to, someday. Again, this is one of those things that grows old real quick and something that Mechjeb can simply do better. equalization of velocity to an intercepted spacecraft.Again, the whole wiggly moving of nodes by hand grows old real quick. hohmann transfers to intercept spacecrafts or moons.Having done this thousands of times by hand grows old REAL quick general orbital maneuvers, circularization, adjustment of apo- or periapsis, change of inclination.of course porkchop diagrams for transfers to other planets.I usually plan all my standard orbital maneuvers by hand moving nodes.

I always dock by hand, but I use the awesome docking alignment mod which is like a revelation making docking IMHO a breeze and actual fun. In that vein, I generally always fly my rockets to orbit by hand while trying more or less successfully to fly a gravity turn. AND I know how to do an intercept, but I hate messing with the nodes. Also, the controls for moving the rocket with WASD are non-optimal. Yeah, I was against it at first too, but it makes sense. Rockets aren't flown, they are programmed and/or auto-piloted. I'm sure that'll change when I have 100 things orbiting and crashing into things around Kerbin.

Kerbal Engineer does all of the analytics stuff that I'd use in Mechjeb anyways. I'm part of the "I want to control my own rockets" crowd. Badly, and usually on the mountains, but still me. Trivial maneuver nodes are all MJ but landing a first stage is all me. A correction after the Hohmann is usually cheaper, as I'm usually heading for something higher than my parking orbit.įor me, it's knowing what tools you have and best using them.

Rendezvous again is usually manual with a final automated Hohmann node, because MechJeb likes to match planes too eagerly and I tend not to unless they're way out. If it's a nicely RCSed ship I know MechJeb can handle, I'll let MJ do it. I launch manually, land manually (my landing accuracy is awful), but space maneuvers are all automated with the exception of the occasional inclination adjustment, because I usually want to mess with peri/apo at the same time.ĭocking is a crapshoot. Some things are just better automated how I play the game. It's quicker and simpler to let MechJeb do it. In fact, I manually launch most of my rockets.īut fuck doing every burn node by hand. I can eyeball and fly a rocket along an almost ideal gravity turn and drop it into a circular 100x100 km orbit.
